Financials are one of the trickiest parts of a business to understand. FT Alphaville has spent many hours attempting to decipher bank earnings — googling acronyms, combing through asset breakdowns and whatnot — only to often come out feeling even more befuddled than we were before. Just what is a Level 3 asset when it’s at home?
But luckily for us, people like Marc Rubenstein exist. If you don’t know Marc, he started off his career on the sellside, covering banks at Barclays de Zoete Wedd — now known as Barclays Investment Bank — before stop-offs at Schroders and then Credit Suisse, where he was head of the European banks research team. Eventually, he landed at famed UK hedge fund Lansdowne Partners as a senior analyst and portfolio manager. Since “retiring” in 2016, he’s dabbled in research, consulting and has just launched his own Substack, Net Interest.
So if you want someone to help you distinguish between net interest margins and NPLs, Marc is your man. This Friday afternoon, he’ll be joining us on Twitter Spaces to discuss all things financials: from Evergrande’s current debt woes to the explosive growth of the buy-now-pay-later business model, and perhaps even Robinhood’s disappointing IPO.
So do join us at 4pm BST/ 11am EST for a chin wag. To access simply follow Jamie (@ajb_powell) or Jemima (@jemimajoanna) on Twitter, and then click on the Space when it opens just before the hour. See you there!
