Ford China first quarter sales grew 73.3% to 153,822 vehicles with the rider that the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns began in the country in Q1 2020.
Nonetheless, it was the automaker’s fourth consecutive quarter of growth in the country and it claimed sales of Ford and Lincoln brand vehicles outpaced the industry in the first quarter.
Each business division achieved year-over-year growth, including 46.3% (to 49,300) for passenger vehicles sold by NDSD (National Distribution Services Division), 217% for Lincoln and 77.1% for commercial vehicle JV JMC. Sales of Ford brand SUVs rose 103.4% to 34,000 units and Transit commercial vehicle volume was up 73.8% to 12,000 units.
“Ford continues to deliver on its commitment to offer consumers in China the right mix of locally produced, world-class vehicles,” said Anning Chen, president and CEO, Ford China.
“We intend to fully build on these four consecutive quarters of sales growth to meet rising Chinese consumer demand.”
In Taiwan, Ford Lio-Ho sold almost 7,800 units in the first quarter, up 59.5%, driven by “robust” sales of the Kuga and Focus.
Ford China will launch a locally produced Mustang Mach-E electric SUV line later this year.
